Why the Numbers Swing So Hard
Waits depend on your visa category, the city you pick, and pure timing. A first-time B1/B2 in Delhi behaves nothing like a renewal in Hyderabad. Consulates release slots in waves, often at odd hours, and cancellations reopen appointments with no warning. The posted wait is an estimate for a fresh booking, not a ceiling.
This is the single most useful thing to understand. Availability is a moving target, so the person who checks often, across every city, beats the person who books the first slot they see and stops looking.
Check Every Consulate, Not Just Yours
India has US visa posts in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. You are not tied to the one nearest home. A Bengaluru applicant willing to fly to Hyderabad for the interview can sometimes save months. Before you accept a distant date, look at all five, because the gap between the worst and best city can be enormous.
The Interview Waiver Route
If you qualify for the interview waiver, often called dropbox, you skip the in-person queue entirely. It generally applies to renewals within a set window of your prior visa, in the same category. Eligibility rules tighten and loosen over time, so confirm the current criteria before assuming you qualify. When it applies, it is the fastest legitimate path there is.
The Emergency Appointment
For genuine urgency, the expedited appointment request exists. It is not a shortcut for a holiday you booked late. It is for real, documented situations. A medical emergency, a funeral abroad, urgent unforeseen business, or a student whose program start is imminent. You request it after booking a regular appointment, you state the reason, and a consular decision follows. Approval is not automatic, and a weak reason wastes the attempt.
What to Refuse
Any agent promising a guaranteed early slot for a fee is selling something they do not control. Appointment availability is a US government system. Nobody has a private door into it. What a real service does is monitor availability properly, know which city and category to target, and move the moment a slot opens. That is a genuine edge. A guaranteed date is a story.
