Quick Answer

Indians can now get Afghanistan visa online through new e-visa system. Fee waived for Indians but service charges apply. Processing takes 1-3 weeks.

The Big News: Afghanistan Launches E-Visa System in 2026

Afghanistan changed the game for Indian travelers in March 2026. Afghanistan launched a new online e-Visa system in March 2026 to simplify visa applications and encourage tourism. After years of embassy visits and third-country runs to Dubai, you can now apply for an Afghanistan tourist visa from your Mumbai flat or Delhi office.

We've processed dozens of these new e-visas since the system went live. The process works — but there are crucial details you need to know first.

Why This E-Visa System Matters for Indians

Indian citizens are granted gratis visa, which means they are not charged for any type of visa. That's the good news. The reality? You'll still pay service fees to visa agencies or processing charges for the e-visa platform.

Before March 2026, getting an Afghanistan visa meant:

  • Flying to Dubai to apply at the Afghan consulate
  • Waiting weeks for embassy appointments in Delhi
  • Getting invitation letters through tour operators
  • Dealing with embassy closures and reopenings

The new e-visa eliminates most of these headaches. The system removes the need to visit an Afghan embassy, obtain a letter of invitation, or travel to a third country such as Dubai, Islamabad, or Tehran to collect the visa.

How Much Does Afghanistan Visa Cost for Indians in 2026?

Here's where it gets interesting. Visa fee waived for regular or ordinary Indian passport holders. But the e-visa platform charges processing fees.

For the new e-visa system:

  • Application fee: $8
  • Visa fee and processing: $123.71 USD ($120 + $3.71 processing fee)
  • Total cost: $128 (approximately ₹10,700)

If you apply through the embassy route, you'll pay zero government fees but agencies charge ₹2,000-5,000 in service charges.

Express Processing Available

The processing time for Express E-Visa applications is typically one (1) business day from the time a complete and accurate application is successfully submitted. Express processing costs extra, though exact fees aren't published.

Afghanistan E-Visa Requirements for Indians

The document list is refreshingly simple:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the expiration date
  • Digital passport photo (white background)
  • Clear copy of National Identity Card or residence permit (if applicable)
  • Completed online application form

Upload a clear scan of your passport biodata page. The system rejects blurry or cropped images, so use a proper scanner or high-quality phone camera.

What You Don't Need

Unlike the old system, you don't need:

  • Invitation letters
  • Hotel bookings (though you can mention any hotel name)
  • Flight tickets
  • Sponsor details
  • Embassy appointments

Processing Times: What to Expect

Processing times reported so far suggest around 1–3 weeks, although faster express processing may be available. But we've seen faster turnarounds.

I applied for the Afghan e-visa with my Hungarian passport through the new Afghan e-visa portal on Sunday, 15 March 2026, and received it in 3 hours and 10 minutes. That's an outlier, but shows the system can work fast when all documents are perfect.

Standard processing breakdown:

  • Application review: 3-5 days
  • Payment request sent: Within 1 week
  • Final visa issued: As soon as I paid the visa fee, I immediately received another email confirming that my Afghan e-visa application had been approved, with my e-visa attached as a PDF.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Visit the official application website - https://eafghans.com/e-visa/ and verify your nationality and residence are eligible.

Step 2: Create Account

You must complete the identity verification step by taking a live photo of yourself and a photo of your passport page. Use good lighting and follow the guidelines exactly.

Step 3: Fill Application Form

It is recommended to fill out the form slowly and carefully without rushing. Overall, the process is very straightforward and easy.

Key form sections:

  • Personal information (match your passport exactly)
  • Visa Type: Select Tourist
  • Visa Duration: There is only one option available, which is 3 months
  • Travel dates (approximate is fine)
  • Accommodation details (any hotel name works)

Step 4: Pay Application Fee

By clicking on the link, I was able to pay the online service fee, including the payment processing fee. The system accepts major credit cards.

Pro tip: When I switched to a United States VPN, the payment went through successfully. If payment fails, try different VPN locations.

Step 5: Wait for Processing

Approximately three hours after submitting the application, the applicants receives an email asking to complete the visa payment fee. Check your spam folder regularly.

Step 6: Final Payment and Visa Issuance

Once approved for processing, you'll get a payment link for the main visa fee. As soon as the visa fee is paid, an email arrives confirming that the Afghan e-visa application has been approved, with the e-visa attached as a PDF.

Important Limitations and Entry Points

Here's what every Indian traveler must know:

Entry Restrictions

Currently, you can enter Afghanistan with the e-visa only through Kabul International Airport. The e-visa is not yet accepted at land border crossings.

This is crucial — you cannot use the e-visa to enter Afghanistan from Pakistan, Iran, or Central Asian borders. Kabul airport only.

Validity Period

  • After the visa is issued, you must use it within three months
  • Once you enter Afghanistan, the visa is valid for 30 days
  • Single entry only

Exit Freedom

However, you can exit Afghanistan anywhere with the e-visa. So you can fly into Kabul and leave via land borders to Pakistan or Iran.

Embassy Route Still Available

The traditional embassy route works parallel to the e-visa system. The embassy was reopened in October 2026 after been closed in December 2023 by the former Islamic Republic-era diplomats. In January 2026, India accredited the Taliban diplomat Noor Ahmad Noor as the Chargé d'Affaires of the embassy.

Address: 5/50-F Shantipath in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi

The Delhi embassy handles tourist visas with the traditional sticker process.

Afghanistan Consulate Mumbai

Afghanistan also operates consulates general in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The Consulate General of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in India issues visas to individuals residing in and applying from India. Due to regulatory constraints, we can only issue single entry visas valid for a one-month stay, with the exception of Business Visas (can be issued up to a maximum period of 3 years with multiple entries).

Which Route Should You Choose?

After processing both e-visas and embassy applications for our clients, here's my take:

Choose E-Visa If:

  • You're flying directly to Kabul
  • You want to avoid embassy visits
  • You're comfortable with online payments in USD
  • You don't mind the processing fee

Choose Embassy Route If:

  • You plan to enter via land borders
  • You want to avoid foreign transaction fees
  • You prefer dealing with officials in person
  • You're applying for business or other visa types

Common Mistakes to Avoid

We've seen these errors delay applications:

  1. Passport photo issues: White background is mandatory. Studio photos work best.
  2. Date confusion: At one point it looked like the system switched the dates, so it is worth verifying them before submitting the form.
  3. Payment problems: Use VPN if payments fail with your regular connection
  4. Incomplete documents: Processing may be delayed in the following circumstances: Submission of incorrect, incomplete, or expired documents

Special Visa Categories

The e-visa system currently issues only a single-entry Tourist e-Visa valid for 30 days. For other categories:

  • Business Visa: Embassy route only, up to 3 years multiple entry
  • Official Visa: For diplomatic and government officials
  • Student Visa: For educational institutions
  • Spouse Visa: An Indian who is married to an Afghan national can apply for entry visa. It is issued with a validity of 90 days and period of 30 days stay.

Travel Tips for Afghanistan

Before you apply, know what you're getting into:

  • Tourism is possible but infrastructure is basic
  • Most visitors use tour operators for logistics
  • Cash economy — bring USD
  • Limited international banking
  • Dress conservatively
  • Women face additional restrictions

Between March 2023 and March 2026, nearly 28,000 foreigners visited Afghanistan for work and tourism purposes. The numbers show tourism is slowly returning.

Insurance and Health Requirements

Afghanistan doesn't officially require travel insurance, but we strongly recommend comprehensive coverage including:

  • Medical evacuation
  • Emergency repatriation
  • Trip cancellation
  • High-risk country coverage

Most standard policies exclude Afghanistan, so look for specialized high-risk coverage.

Final Thoughts

The new Afghanistan e-visa system is a genuine improvement for Indian travelers. Getting a visa to Afghanistan just got a lot easier! But it's not perfect — the Kabul-only entry requirement limits overland travel options.

If you're serious about visiting Afghanistan, start the e-visa process 3-4 weeks before travel. The system works, but building in buffer time prevents last-minute stress.

Remember: Afghanistan remains a challenging destination. The visa is just the first step. Research thoroughly, travel with experienced operators, and prioritize safety over adventure.

The e-visa system represents Afghanistan's push to revive tourism. For Indian travelers willing to take the plunge, the process has never been smoother.
