You Do Not Get to Pick the "Easy" Schengen Country. The Rules Pick For You.
A popular piece of bad advice tells Indian travellers to apply through whichever Schengen consulate is fastest or most lenient this month. It is bad advice because it misreads how the system assigns your application, and because applying through a country you are not really visiting is the kind of inconsistency that gets you refused.
There is a rule, and it has nothing to do with which embassy has a shorter queue.
The Main-Destination Rule
You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. That is your main destination, and its consulate owns your application. If your trip is Paris for five nights and Amsterdam for two, you apply to France, no matter how the German or Dutch queue looks that week.
When two countries get an equal number of nights, a second rule breaks the tie. You apply to the country you enter first. Land in Rome before taking the train to Vienna, with three nights in each, and Italy is your consulate.
Why Gaming It Backfires
Officers cross-check your itinerary against your hotel bookings and your flights. Apply through Estonia because you heard it approves quickly, while every reservation points at a fortnight through France and Spain, and you have handed the officer a contradiction. Misrepresenting your main destination is treated as exactly what it is, and it shows up in the refusal numbers.
The "easy country" theory also rests on a false premise. Approval rates vary, but the tough posts are not the ones people expect. In 2025 Slovenia refused 46% of Indian applicants and Bulgaria 37%, while several of the obvious destinations approved at far higher rates. Chasing a supposedly lenient consulate can walk you straight into a stricter one.
What Actually Moves Your Odds
Applying to the correct consulate is step one, and it costs nothing. After that, approval turns on the things the rule cannot fix for you. A coherent itinerary that matches your bookings. Financial proof that comfortably covers the trip. Travel insurance that clears the threshold. A clear purpose, and a believable reason you are coming home.
Pick the consulate the rules assign you, then build a file that consulate cannot argue with. That is the whole game, and it beats hunting for a shortcut that was never there.
