Quick Answer

US interview-waiver (dropbox) eligibility was gutted in 2025. The window shrank to 12 months and F-1, H-1B, O-1, L-1 and others were removed. Who still qualifies, and what it means for your wait.

The Dropbox You Read About Is Mostly Gone.

For years, the interview waiver, known in India as dropbox, let large numbers of applicants renew a US visa by courier instead of queuing for an interview. That era has largely ended. If you are planning around the old rules, you are planning around a program that no longer exists in the form you remember.

Here is what actually survives in 2026, and what the change means for your wait.

What Changed

Two cuts did the damage. First, in February 2025, the eligibility window shrank from forty-eight months to twelve. Where you could once waive an interview on a visa that expired up to four years ago, the prior visa now has to be valid or expired within the last twelve months. Then, through late 2025, most categories were removed from the program entirely. F-1, H-1B, H-4, L-1, J-1 and O-1 all lost interview-waiver eligibility.

What is left is narrow. As things stand, B-1/B-2 renewals are the main category ordinary travellers can still use, alongside a handful of diplomatic and border-crossing categories. If you are renewing a tourist or business visa, dropbox may still be open to you. For almost everything else, it is not.

Who Still Qualifies

To use the interview waiver now, you generally need to be a citizen or resident of India or Bhutan applying in India, hold a previous US visa in the same category you are applying for, and have that prior visa either still valid or expired within the last twelve months. Miss any of those and you are booking an in-person interview like a first-time applicant.

What This Means in Practice

More people in the interview hall means longer waits for everyone. The students and workers who used to skip the queue are now in it, which lengthens the line even for those who never qualified for dropbox in the first place. If your renewal falls outside the surviving categories, treat an in-person interview as the default and plan your timeline around it.

The practical takeaway is simple. Do not assume the waiver is available because a friend used it two years ago. Check your exact category and the twelve-month window before you count on skipping the interview, because the odds are now that you cannot.
