Quick Answer

The UK Global Talent visa is close to a British O-1: move on your own record, no employer sponsor, self-employment allowed. How the Tech Nation route works, and why Indian founders overlook it.

The UK Has an O-1. Founders Keep Missing It.

Indian founders who research a US move rarely look sideways at the United Kingdom, and they should. The Global Talent visa is close to a British version of the O-1. No employer has to sponsor you. There is no lottery to lose, and nothing stops you being self-employed or running your own company. You move on the strength of your own record rather than an employer willing to file for you.

The route that matters for founders and tech leaders runs through Tech Nation.

How the Digital Technology Route Works

Global Talent has two stages. First you win an endorsement from an approved body confirming you are a leader, or a rising leader, in your field. Then you apply for the visa itself. For digital technology, which covers software, AI, data, fintech, cybersecurity and adjacent areas, the endorsing body is Tech Nation. Its contract was renewed through 2028, and since August 2025 the process uses the standard Home Office stage-one form, which simplified an application that used to feel opaque.

Talent or Promise

There are two tiers, and picking the right one is half the battle. Exceptional Talent is for founders and technologists who are already recognised leaders, with a sustained body of work behind them. Think senior roles at prominent companies, meaningful press, awards, or a track record investors and peers already know.

Exceptional Promise is for earlier-stage people whose trajectory points at that level. A founder two or three years in, with real traction but not yet a known name in their niche, usually fits here. The evidence bar is lower, and the settlement timeline differs in a way worth understanding before you choose.

Why Founders Should Care

The freedom is the point. A sponsored work visa ties you to one employer. Global Talent ties you to nothing. You can found a company, join one, advise several, or switch entirely, without re-filing your immigration status. For a founder whose plans change every quarter, that flexibility is worth more than it looks.

It also leads somewhere. Exceptional Talent holders can apply for settlement after three years, Promise holders after five. That makes it not just a way into the UK but a credible path to staying.

What the Endorsement Actually Tests

Tech Nation is not counting your funding. It weighs recognition and impact. Have you built or led something notable. Do people in your field cite your work, invite you to speak, or follow what you ship. Is there a documented trail of you being good at this, visible to someone outside your own company.

If that sounds familiar, it should. The founder who can build an O-1 case can usually build a Global Talent case from much of the same evidence. For many Indian founders weighing the US, the UK is the option they never seriously priced.
