You Do Not Have to Reapply for Schengen Every Trip. India Now Has a Path to a Five-Year Visa.
Frequent Indian travellers still treat every European trip as a fresh Schengen application, with the same paperwork and the same anxiety each time. Since 2024, that is often unnecessary. The EU adopted more generous rules for Indians, and a repeat traveller can now hold a multi-year, multiple-entry Schengen visa instead of starting from zero every time.
Understanding how the cascade works turns Schengen from a recurring chore into a long-term convenience.
The Cascade, in Plain Terms
In April 2024 the European Commission introduced a cascade regime for Indian nationals. Once you have lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years, you become eligible for a two-year multiple-entry visa. That two-year visa is normally followed by a five-year one, provided your passport has enough validity left to cover it.
During that period you can enter and leave the 29 Schengen countries freely, with no new application each trip. The one limit that still applies is the 90-days-in-any-180 rule, which caps how long you stay rather than how often you go.
The Shortcut for Genuine Frequent Travellers
There is also a faster lane. Under Article 24 of the visa code, an applicant who can prove an established need for frequent travel may be granted a long-validity multiple-entry visa directly, without waiting to build the full cascade history. A business owner with regular European meetings, or anyone with a documented pattern of frequent legitimate travel, can make that case. The evidence has to be real, but the door is open.
What "Eligible" Does Not Mean
Meeting the criteria strengthens your case. It does not hand you a five-year visa by right. The consulate still decides, and it still weighs your travel history, your finances, and the reasons you want long validity. A clean record of using previous Schengen visas properly, always entering and leaving within the rules, is what makes the longer visa likely rather than merely possible.
So the practical move is to travel clean on your early Schengen visas, keep the evidence of your trips, and then apply for the multi-year visa from a position of proven reliability. Do that and you may not touch a Schengen application again for years.
