Afghanistan's E-Visa Launch Bypasses Indian Travelers
Afghanistan moved its tourist visa process online in March 2026, launching a new electronic platform aimed at simplifying entry procedures and reviving international travel to the country. However, this digital revolution comes with a major caveat for Indians.
Indian passport holders residing in India are subject to restrictions and are not eligible to apply for an e-visa. The system currently filters applicants based on nationality and location, and India is not included in the approved list.
This means while tourists from many countries can now apply online for a 30-day single-entry tourist visa through the new interface, Indians must continue using the traditional embassy route.
Current Process for Indians in 2026
Despite the digital shift happening globally, Indian citizens must obtain a visa before travelling to Afghanistan through the conventional embassy application process.
The Consulate General of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in India issues visas to individuals residing in and applying from India. Due to regulatory constraints, they can only issue single entry visas valid for a one-month stay, with the exception of Business Visas (can be issued up to a maximum period of 3 years with multiple entries).
Processing times remain unchanged: An Afghanistan Visa application is normally processed within 5 to 7 working days.
Visa Requirements and Documentation
For Indians applying through the embassy route, the requirements include:
- Original Passport with at least 6 months validity and minimum 3 blank pages + all old passports if any
- 2 Scanned recent colour photographs
- Completed visa application form
- Supporting documents based on visa category
Visa fee is waived for regular or ordinary Indian passport holders. However, service providers may charge a nominal processing fee.
Limited Visa on Arrival Options
There's one exception to the embassy-only rule: Only Indian Businessmen/businesswomen and investors can obtain visa on arrival at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. This service is not available at other international airports in Afghanistan.
Indians travelling for any other purpose will need to obtain the visa in advance.
Why Indians Are Excluded from E-Visa System
The portal includes an eligibility checker that assesses applicants based on both nationality and country of residence. Eligible only if nationality is not restricted and residence is not restricted.
Interestingly, Indian nationals living in other countries may still be able to use the platform, provided their country of residence is not on the restricted list. This suggests the restriction is based on India as a country of residence rather than Indian nationality alone.
What SaathiVisa Recommends
Given the current restrictions, we recommend:
Apply early: With processing times of 5-7 days, start your application at least 2 weeks before travel to account for any delays.
Check your documents: Ensure your passport has minimum 6 months validity and 2 blank pages for visa stamping.
Consider business visa: If you have legitimate business interests, a business visa offers multiple entries and longer validity up to 3 years.
Monitor policy changes: Visa systems evolve over time. Afghanistan may expand e-visa eligibility to include Indians in future updates.

Tourism Potential Despite Restrictions
Afghanistan has seen a notable rise in foreign tourists during 2026, as visitors from across the world explored its historical and cultural heritage. Despite past challenges, there has been a gradual return of foreign visitors, and the e-visa system is part of an effort to rebuild global travel interest.
While Indians currently cannot benefit from the streamlined e-visa process, the traditional embassy route remains functional and efficient for those determined to explore Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage.
